Ship Components and Storage Capacity

This page covers ship component families and the storage rules at the Space Yard.

Component Families and Storage

Ships are built from components crafted and stored in the Space Yard.

Each component belongs to a specific family:

  • Infrastructure: the ship's chassis
  • Hull: durability
  • Reactor: speed
  • Weapon: attack power
  • Shield: energy protection
  • Hangar: craft-carrying capacity

Components are not complete ships. They are spare parts that you can produce in advance, store, then use to build or assemble your designs.

A civilian design uses the same components, but its design prohibits weapons and hangars and limits other equipment to 20 % of the chassis's raw capacity. The full rule is explained in warship and civilian designs. This restriction does not apply to detached parts in storage or being transported.

Component storage capacity depends on the level of the Space Yard and is measured in logistics units, rather than by the raw number of parts.

Formula:

  • level 0: 0
  • levels 1 to 12: 8 × floor(10 724 × (level / 12)^2.16)
  • above level 12: 8 × floor(10 724 × 10^((level - 12) / 6))

Level 12 provides 85 792 logistics units, and level 18 provides 857 920.

Storage weight:

  • standard component: ceil(volume / 1000), minimum 1
  • infrastructure: ceil(capacity / 1000), minimum 1

The Frigate and Battleship are two versatile chassis, positioned between the Shuttle and the Corvette, and between the Heavy Cruiser and the Destroyer, respectively.

The prices and durations apply to the infrastructure alone, before the usual discounts and multipliers. Equipment adds to the model's cost, duration, and mass. Total capacity is used to install this equipment and retain available cargo; it does not guarantee that resources can be loaded up to this volume.

The weight in UL indicates the space occupied by the infrastructure in storage, not hangar capacity. Frigate and Battleship models travel independently: they can carry hangars, but cannot be loaded into another ship's hangars. Their evasion depends on the chassis and the mass of their equipment.

Player production is rejected if existing stock + components already queued + new production exceeds logistics capacity. Components obtained through rewards, exploration, or system credits may exceed this limit: they remain in stock, but new production and FLEET component deliveries remain blocked until capacity is sufficient.

To install Hangars on a ship design and learn their capacity, see ship composition.

Example

You can produce weapons, hulls, and reactors in advance, then use them later to quickly assemble a series of ships.

Hangars: Capacity and Requirements

Light, medium, and heavy hangars are built at the Space Yard. They require this building and Infrastructure technology at levels 10, 13, and 16, respectively.

Hangars in storage are immobile, like infrastructure components: you cannot load them as components on a Transport or Deployment mission. A ship equipped with hangars can move normally.

Only military ship designs can install hangars. Civilian designs therefore cannot carry craft, but they can transport other detached components permitted by the mission rules.

Their capacities, volumes, and installation rules are explained in ship composition. To load craft before departure, see embarking on missions.
