Positions and Distances in the Galaxy

A guide to reading a galactic address and understanding the distance calculated between two points on the map.

Reading a Galactic Coordinate

A position in a system is an address made up of three coordinates: zone, system, and position.

The new map has twelve fixed zones, each with two hundred systems. No additional zones open based on the number of players or colonized planets. The address indicates the zone, system, and position within that system; the numbers are identifiers, not a direct measure of proximity. When an account is created, the player is randomly placed in a free, colonizable planetary slot on the map.

Calculating the Distance Between Two Points

Distance depends on the actual positions of the origin and destination in the universe.

Distance depends on the geographical positions of the origin and destination on the map. The calculation distinguishes local travel within the same system from travel between systems. Zone, system, or position numbers alone are therefore not enough to determine the distance. A target that does not occupy a slot, such as a Vellambre Trading Post, has its distance calculated from its actual location within that same geography, without assigning it planetary coordinates. Distance is the same in both directions; long-distance trips follow the same fixed geography as shorter trips.
